Initially wanted to talk about what might have happened to her, except now that he's here, Sanji can't bring himself to do it. Instead he rubs at his neck again and sighs]
[Mmph, a pause. The point of this is to cheer her up, even if only a bit, and it won't do to go into more of the grittier details. Sanji considers his words carefully before he continues on in a cheerful manner]
Well, it sucked.
I already mentioned my family wanted to marry me off, but before that, they just didn't want me around. So I ran away and became an apprentice on a floating restaurant.
... 'Course, the first one sank and I got stuck on a shitty rock in the middle of the ocean for a bit, but. Still better than being royalty.
... The restaurant I was on was attacked by pirates.
I was a kid -- and stupid -- and picked a fight because I thought I was gonna die, even though the pirates hadn't laid a hand on anyone.
Well, got my ass handed to me, lemme tell you. They didn't try to kill me, just got me out of the way, but... a storm hit, and both of the ships sank.
Me and the pirate captain were the only survivors. Got washed up on top of a rock that was too smooth on the sides, so we couldn't even climb down to fish. Our only choice was to wait for a ship to pass by and rescue us.
[... A pause. He sighs, and continues]
It... took a while. Three months. In the meantime, the captain gave me a small bag with food in it, and kept a larger bag for himself. When I was... desperate-- [Starving and dying] -- I tried to steal the shit from him, and just... found a bunch of gold. The lying bastard had given me near everything.

Though frankly, he's still not willing to pry when she's upset, so after a moment of consideration:]
I can tell you about my life back home. Everyone's told me my world sounds like absolute bullshit; makes for some good stories.

...Go for it.

Technically I'm an ex-prince turned pirate chef.

[It might lack the casual exhaustion she would normally say it with, but it's there as a prompt to get him to keep going.]

[Who doesn't want to be a pirate chef!!]
The prince part was --
