[ S I G H.

He tried. ]

The concept of doing a degree in a subject you aren't passionate about is strange to me. [ Says Foxbutt McArtface, chief overlord of stanning art for all eternity. ] But I know it isn't an uncommon thing.

[ Yusuke sees three more years of growth and learning, over an extended jail term. Pushing off the counter, he flops into the seat next to Sanji's and sets his mug down. ]

I doubt I will stop learning though. The art world is ever changing, and developing in its own way. Think of how recent the rise in digital animation is, for example. That is an entire subject I have never even dabbled in.

Oh -- were you limited in course options from the start, then?

[ Hmm. Yusuke watches Sanji digging out creamer and adding it to his drink without entirely taking in what he's watching. He looks quite deep in thought. ]

Maybe. At the very least, doing a degree is good for making connections. Professors, projects that involve speaking to and working with local art museums and exhibition halls. There are benefits, as well.

[ ... But he does know a lot of people who ultimately drop their art degrees once they've wedged a foot far enough in the door to the art world. Maybe he'll be the same? Even if it feels like a waste of money, in some ways, if he does that. ]

Yes, I meant... in terms of getting to America quickly and without fuss. [ It sounds ominous, him saying that, but... ] The application process was a finicky nightmare even applying within the city itself. I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been trying to apply from a different continent.

[ He sighs. ]

Our skills are reduced to what can be put on paper. It's frustrating, but here we are, perpetuating the system.

There's talk of us having to submit pieces as part of a class project. So, yes, there could be something like that on the horizon. I expect I will hear more come September.

... The thought of them finding more paperwork for people to fill out leaves me cold, I must say.

[ Bleh. ]

I... don't know, right now. There are many things I could paint, but none of them are forming full ideas in my mind yet. If we're given a little direction, I may be able to pin one of them down.

[ Too many ideas, too little time. ] -- Although I may have exhausted flowers, if you were planning on suggesting it.

[ Yusuke gets cat snuggles, Sanji gets free art. This is a good deal. ]

... That would rule out a lot of scenery pieces, and flowers, certainly. I draw a lot of things. But...

[ In terms of things he draws but doesn't put to canvas, or publication. ]

Maybe people?

I do. But I usually sketch them, rather than do full paintings. People are always moving and changing, so it feels like I can keep up with them if I'm just sketching.

[ Sanji he has like half a sketch book just of you, don't ask him to show you it he'd get embarrassed.

The other half is Chou. ]

It's worth considering, yes. How would you tie people together in artwork?

There is always a way.

[ He twists in his chair slightly, raising his hands to make a photo frame with his fingers. This scene, right here and now is exactly the sort of thing he’d want to capture. Real, and gentle. There’s nothing poised or faked about the curl of steam from their coffee mugs, the creases in Sanji’s sleepwear and the just-awake sleepiness clinging to the edges of his eyes. ]

Lighting, for example. This scene would require the same soft morning light in the painting, but I would probably soften and blur it a little more to give it an almost dream-like, sleepy quality. Soft colours, and a gentle palette makes the whole thing seem fond.
