CANON HISTORY: God bless the wiki so I don’t have to type this up.

CANON PERSONALITY:
Sanji is the reigning king of emotional whiplash, being one of the most gender-oriented individuals you could ever meet. Have the gods blessed you with a shapely figure, a sweet voice, and a pretty face? Then Sanji will abandon his pride and heart in a matter of seconds, complete with the promise of sweet nothings and the most delicious foods a girl could ever ask for. He will swoon, he will coo, he will roll over like a dog and let you wipe your dirty shoes on his face if it will please you. And one of the more interesting parts of his personality is that he seems to revel in his servitude. He does not, and will not regret his actions if it means making a lady happy.

Thus for all the perverted, raging hormones only a hot-blooded twenty-one-year-old can have, Sanji is sincere when he says loves women with the entirety of his heart. They are human, but they are also goddesses that deserve respect and admiration. In turn, he is their servant who will heed their beck and call, fulfill their every whim if they ask it. He is their knight who will protect them if needed, and will not tolerate another man lessening them in any way. He is their prince who respects them, and will treat them like princesses if they let him. And he’ll do it with a lovesick smile and poetry he pulled out of his ass two seconds ago.

This is not to say Sanji can’t go overboard. Often times he takes his adoration so far that it circles back and comes out as objectification – or just really damn annoying. While he’s quick to call another man out on being anything less than respectful towards a woman, his own perverted voyeurism he considers free game, and the only Devil Fruit power he’s ever been interested in – the power to turn invisible – he partly wanted to use for nefarious reasons. Whether or not he’s aware of his sexist nature is up for debate, but rest assured, he deserves most kicks to the face.

With men, the portrayal he presents is jarringly different, to the point you’d swear it was a different man altogether. Suddenly Sanji is a crass, cussing, hot-headed, chain-smoking bastard who will not take smack for anything. Get in his way and he will kick you through a wall, literally. If he sees women as his glorious rays of sunshine that warm the very center of his being, men are the dirt under his shoes he’s required to share space with. Strangely, this never really stops him from befriending men, but he’s perfectly willing to let his temper fly in their cases.

The blatant difference in how he treats the two genders is due to his strict upbringing. Sanji was taught never to hit a woman. Never. Zeff told him that if he wanted to be considered his son, under no circumstances would he ever lay a hand on them. Didn’t matter if the boy disagreed or thought it unfair, those were simply the rules - and a young Sanji, eager to please the one man who had been kind to him, took the words to heart. It is a creed that can’t be broken (and he has tried once, when others were depending on him). In most cases he takes great pride in his chivalrous tendencies, too. It bleeds into his self-constructed mold on what a gentleman should be, and many a times will show in battle.

But Sanji’s got another side to him, that has nothing to do with gender (usually). Perhaps stronger than his love of women is his love of cooking, and all things related to food. He’s a chef – and a fuckin good one at that. Even though he was born a prince, Sanji settled on a career that his blood relatives consider on par with servitude - and really, if they detest the idea of him cooking for others, that's just another reason to love his job. His respect and dedication to the art of cuisine runs deep as well, and his second creed in life is to never waste a scrap of food, so long as it can be eaten. Being subjected to starvation at the age of ten cemented this eternal appreciation, especially out at sea where nature and fate can be cruel.

As such, he’s deeply sympathetic to anyone who has suffered the same hardship as him, and carries an unorthodox view on customers: if you’re hungry, he will feed you. Background, money, gender, friend or foe... they all fall to the wayside, irrelevant. His duty as a chef is to provide food to others, and even captain’s orders won't stop him. Sanji knows better than anyone what it feels like when your body starts eating itself out of desperation.

In fact, much as he'll sometimes deny it, Sanji's sympathies towards others run deceptively long and fast, and he is prone to a deep sense of loyalty toward those who have enriched his life. This is in part because of his unhappy childhood. Despite being born as a prince with every luxury provided, he was physically beaten by his three brothers and neglected by his father. His mother died young, and his sister, while demonstrating a certain amount of care for him, was too afraid of being bullied herself to stand up for him. He grew up without allies, and it isn't until he runs away and meets Zeff that he's allowed to embrace his kindhearted tendencies. For all his rough speech and denials to the contrary, it's never able to mask how much Sanji cares about everyone around him. His kindness is his greatest asset.

Normally, this is a mark of his strong heart, but it does mean Sanji prioritizes the emotional and physical wellbeing of others. It isn't that he sees no value in himself; Sanji actually has a very healthy self-esteem, despite the abuse he's lived through. However, his endgame always includes keeping everyone else alive, and if that means he can't be there with them, well... sucks, but he's still getting what he wants.

It’s this mindset that landed him in an arranged marriage against his will. Sanji refused to gamble with the lives of Zeff and his crew, and so agreed to bow to the whims of his abusers. And once he's decided on a course of action, he's a mule about it. Almost no one can make him budge. It takes half his crew chasing after him, then weathering his rejection – then punching him in the face when he’s at his lowest moment – before he is able to admit what he truly wants.

All the details aside, Sanji usually comes across as a likable individual – blunt and practical when it's necessary, but coupled with boyish enthusiasm. He can be found holding an intelligent conversation with one of his female crew mates… or he might climb up on the table and start dancing with the younger members of his crew. It depends on his mood and what’s going on. When he’s not being stuck on gender, the man likes to take it easy, and really, just encompasses everything his is without any masks or pretenses. Sanji is Sanji, the guy who will playfully joke around one second, kick someone in the head for being and idiot the next, and then finish it all up by cooing at the ladies in his vicinity.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Cooking: Sanji is a world-class chef who has spent the majority of his life honing his skills in the kitchen. He can create detailed cuisine in little time, always assumed to be ungodly delicious, and he’s considered the best chef in East Blue (an area of sea and islands that account for about 1/4th of the One Piece world).

99 recipes of Kamabakka Kingdom: recipes Sanji received as prizes for defeating the masters on Momoiro, which further improves his cooking techniques. While all 99 haven’t been fully established in canon (and likely never will be), their effects range from instantaneously eliminating fatigue to providing power boosts.

Red Leg: Style: : a form of martial arts that focuses exclusively on the legs and feet to deliver devastating kicks, while the arms are supplemented for support/hand stands. There's a list of attack moves he's been shown to use in canon, but as a general rule, Sanji’s kicks can range from giving someone a knot on the head to breaking their bones. It depends on how angry he is. Kicking in concrete is no large feat for him either, and he’s launched an opponent the size of a small mountain through the air.

Diable Jambe: A sub-category to Sanji’s Red Leg style. Using friction, he heats up his leg until it glows red (yes, even his pants), adding a fire-based attribute to any attack. With this technique he’s been shown to sear grill burns on his opponent, and even set them on fire. Diable Jambe also results in an overall power and speed boost.

Sky Walk/Blue Walk/Super Speed: Thanks to his tremendous leg strength, Sanji has gained the ability to essentially walk on air. With rapid kicking he propels himself higher, creating the illusion of flight. This same method can be employed underwater, though with a different purpose; by kicking off the water, he covers large distances with the speed of a fishman (this translates into really, really fuckin’ fast). As he can reach high speeds underwater, the logical jump is that Sanji is extremely fast on land when he puts his mind to it.

Fire: When Sanji gets angry, he spontaneously combusts into flames from his own rage. He even has an attack in where he becomes so enraged by certain memories that he kicks an opponent while on fire and burns them to a crisp. Currently, the manga and anime have both shown evidence that Sanji has some level of control. For instance, he's hurled fireballs from his feet, and has also produced it to purposefully burn a piece of paper 5 feet in front of him.

Haki: In the world of One Piece, Haki can be equated to the force of one’s will converted into abilities. Kenbunshoku Haki grants the user a limited sixth sense and precognitive abilities – thus a fighter can predict the moves of an opponent a split second before they occur, and they can also sense the presence of others outside their range of vision, as well as a person’s emotional state and physical prowess. Busoshoku Haki creates something of an invisible armor around a fighter, protecting them from blows that would normally result in heavy damage. It can also be used to augment physical attacks.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Alessandro "Sanji" Vinsmoke
AU AGE: 21
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: The only difference is he has no curly brow. A travesty.

AU HISTORY:
• Sanji was born a quadruplet to a French father and Italian mother. Both his parents were ecstatic but for very different reasons.

• Said reasons eventually led to a messy, bitter divorce. Originally, his mother was to take Sanji and the daughter, but the father was from an extremely wealthy family and played dirty to keep his sons, only allowing the daughter to go off with the mother.

• The reason for this arrangement became apparent as the boys grew older: all four were forced to compete for the family business, and more sons meant more chances at grooming a successful heir. Unfortunately, Sanji's inherent strength was his kindness, which in daddy's eyes meant jack shit. He turned a blind eye to his son’s physical and mental abuse at the hand of his brothers.

• With his kindness unable save him, Sanji did what was necessary to survive. He began to beat his brothers in every area his father demanded, excelling in politics, business, schooling, and combat. On top of that, he also dished back the abuse his brothers had served him all those years ago. By the time he was 16, not only was it apparent who should be heir, but his siblings didn’t dare get in his way.

• One would think this would satisfy Father Vinsmoke, but no. Sanji was not afraid to air out his grievances, not even to his parent, and that combined with the way he rubbed his victories in everyone’s faces meant daddy felt safer viewing him with contempt. He couldn’t control Sanji like he could his siblings, and that made him a threat.

• Feeling frustrated, cheated, and realizing he would never earn his father’s support, Sanji let his rage fly free and became estranged from his family. He left home in an attempt to find his mother, only to discover she had been dead for years. He never found his sister.

• After wandering/traveling around Europe for two years, doing odd jobs to keep himself fed, he earned enough money for a one-way ticket to Recollé. His father’s private schooling meant Sanji easily landed a loaded scholarship.

• Sanji is currently finishing up college, a junior in business. Some of his harsh edges have been smoothed over now that he’s free of his father’s influence, but he’s otherwise a conceited, bored, and temperamental asshole who doesn’t play well with others.

• Tl;dr this is what happens when Sanji isn’t saved by the power of friendship

AU PERSONALITY:
The biggest, most fundamental difference between AU!Sanji and his canon is that he doesn’t put much stock into kindness. That core trait wasn’t nurtured as he was growing up, and the years have left it stunted, underdeveloped. Being kind is a crutch, not a blessing. He is immediately suspicious of those who offer a hand of friendship, and maintaining lasting relationships is very difficult for him (i.e. – he manages a month before freaking out and dumping his partners.)

Which doesn’t mean there’s no kindness within him, or that it’s not still an innate piece of his personality – more that the lessons his father taught him have too strong of a hold, and so Sanji smoothers his reflexive need to help.

A few years in Recollé have taught him the world won’t end if he holds open a door for someone, but the truth is he’s usually nice when there’s a benefit to being sweet, or the person has something he wants. Otherwise he can be crass, hurtful, and very dismissive.

Essentially, he acts like canon Sanji, except there’s not the underlying tone of “but actually I care a lot about you.” His rudeness is to be taken at face value.

The only exception? Children. Sanji is very careful around them and will go ballistic if he sees anyone giving kids a hard time. Being more self-aware than his canon self, Sanji knows how important it is for children to be treated with a gentle hand. He doesn’t want them growing up into the asshole he is. Which is a touch ironic, seeing as Sanji is closest to his kindhearted nature when he’s trying to protect future generations from the abuse he suffered.

On top of that, many of the core traits from his canon are just. Gone. He will absolutely smack a woman if he feels justified in doing so. He fights with his hands as well as his feet. If someone is starving, sorry friend. Maybe the next jackass has got a dollar you can borrow.

He also can’t cook worth a damn. Seriously, who let me write this AU.
