[Sanji would disagree with that, if he could hear Richard's thoughts. But he can't (and this isn't about his views, anyway), so his mind wanders to different issues.]

... It didn't bring you much shitty solace. [A raised brow; he's voicing what he sees, and what he sees his Richard looking far from happy]

[Richard gives a short, sharp, laugh, decidedly bitter this time. The only thing it accomplished was making him feel better for a little while, but once he returned to his senses, he only ended up feeling worse.]

It can't bring my father back, nor undo everything else that happened.

No...

But it did end up protecting your kingdom, didn't it? [Sure, there are other ways to handle such treachery, but Sanji's of the mind that guys like that have forfeited their right to live - or if nothing else, deserve the consequences gained by their actions]

I suppose it did.

[But right now Richard really just looks like he wants to curl up into a ball. He's made so many mistakes about so many things...]

[Hnn. Well, Sanji is in no position to tell Richard to cheer up. He settles for a weary glance. This still doesn't completely explain the whole "Destroy the world" angle, either.]

... And after that?

After that...

[He sighs, brushing his bangs out of his face as he takes a sip of his second drink. Even he really isn't sure why he's talking so much about this all of a sudden; he hates discussing it, hates even thinking about it, but somehow at the same time it feels good to get it out in the open.]

I didn't know it at the time, but the only reason I'd survived the second assassination attempt when I was younger was due to the fact that I'd been parasitized by an ancient being who was as angry at humanity as I was.

... You don't say.

[Hasn't his life been wonderful, Sanji?]

I thought the two of us would be able to understand each other, but it seems that the feelings that resonated the most strongly between the two of us were our anger and resentment, and the end results...

[Yeah. That part he mentioned about wanting to destroy the world? Yeeeeep.]

So let me get this straight...

A shitty parasite infected you as a kid, you two fed off each other's resentment, and I'm assuming that thing bestowed you with the power to do whatever the hell you thought was necessary.

... Until Asbel or someone stopped you.

That's exactly what happened. That's why I owe him so much now, and for saving my life multiple times before.

Lambda - "that thing" - bestowed me with power, but at the same time he gradually took over my body and mind until I could no longer tell which thoughts were mine and which were his. For a while, the two of us truly believed that the only way to save the world and eliminate conflict was to erase humanity from it.

[Quite a few things suddenly click into place now - like Richard always referring to himself as the princess in distress rather than the knight. It's a wicked spin on the usual fairy-tale script.

He nearly asks how much damage Richard "bestowed" on the world, but at the last second, figures that's an unnecessary question, and maybe something Sanji doesn't need answered. He skips ahead, instead]

When you went back home, it was after Lambda left your body? [Hell knows how Asbel managed to pull that off]

[Really, Richard's staying remarkably calm for this discussion topic, considering just how painful it is to him-- chalk that up to the alcohol, the fourth glass of which he's currently consuming. As to how long that will last, though... well, that's anyone's guess.]

It was immediately after we'd been separated. When I returned here, six months had passed since then.

Are things at least changing for the better then?

As much as they can, though it will likely take years for Windor to pay off the debt that I've caused Strahta and Fendel.

[He just inhales, then exhales in a long sigh. It's not something he can complain about, as he was the one responsible for all of it.]

Hn. [He pauses to take another sip of his drink] Shit'll get better, one way or another. [Not to downplay the tragedy; Sanji's just glad to hear Richard is setting things right. It's reassuring, to say the least]

... Oi. Thanks for telling me. [Because he knows Richard didn't have to]

[Richard tries for a smile, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. Those still look tired and worn, still pained.]

You and Isamu are the only ones from another world who know.

Naoki doesn't-- [Ah. Fuck. He hadn't meant to say that outloud. Sanji swallows an internal wince and damns the alcohol for loosening his tongue]

[Richard's expression darkens noticeably at the mention of that name, his gaze falling back down to his now-empty fourth glass.]

He knew some, but if he no longer remembers things from Luceti, then I suppose that makes it a moot point.

[Damn, he's faced with a dilemma here. Sanji knows for certain that Naoki is regaining his former memories, quite rapidly. If things progress as he expects, it won't even be a few days before he recalls exactly what happened between him and Richard.

He doesn't think that's something to keep a secret... but then, Sanji isn't sure how Richard would react to it. Eventually he sighs and nods, turning his stare elsewhere]

Guess so. [If he's gonna find out one way or another, he can find out later, when the shock has worn off]

[Oh, Richard already has an inkling of suspicion that Naoki remembers more than he was letting on due to his reaction-- that's part of why his emotions are such a mess right now. But with no way to prove it, all he can do is work himself into a neurosis considering the possibilities.]

It isn't something other people should have to hear.

[He's no fool; he's well aware of just how upsetting a story like that must be to hear. What's more, he doesn't want to look like he's fishing for pity either. He's had more than enough superficial sympathy to last a lifetime as it is.]

[Sanji doesn't deny that. Richard is a kind person, but the average listener won't take kindly to hearing he tried to destroy his world. Most of their current friendship, in fact, comes down to Sanji having never known this until his perception of Richard was set.

Funny how shit works out.]

What'll do now? Now that Naoki's back?

[There's a flash of pain in Richard's eyes before he shuts them and looks away, chewing on his lower lip. Sure, he was expecting that question, but that doesn't make hearing it (or thinking about it) any easier.]

... I don't know. I suppose the only thing I can do is give him space and let him approach me on his own terms.

[... if he even wants to. Richard can't exactly blame him if he doesn't.]

[Tied down to the waiting game. He supposes that's fair and nods once, tilting his glass back and forth and watching the ice cling to the sides.]

Just do me a favor while you're waiting - don't go diving off the shitty deep end, alright?

[Richard's inhalation in response is audible, and he holds his breath a long moment before slowly exhaling it all in a long, soft sigh.]

I'm afraid I can't promise you that.

[Back in those tunnels... he would have gone through with it had Asbel not shown up. Sure, he doesn't feel that desperate or hopeless now, but just knowing that he's capable of reaching such a low point concerns him.]

Heh... guess that wasn't something I could really ask for. [But he's grateful for Richard's honesty. Sanji also hope he knows what that means]

In that case, we'll all have to keep you company.
