[December 24th, action]
After all, she's just spent three weeks working as a medic. Some of the things she saw were ugly at best. And the memory of Sora with his wing ripped off is still so incredibly vivid in her mind. She can't help but imagine Sora's place swapped with Sanji. It is only because the thought occurred to her once already and she managed to shove it off that she doesn't physically flinch.
You don't get your wing ripped off from a simple mistake or oversight. She understands - intimately - that Sanji is an incredibly powerful and skilled fighter. If he got his wing ripped off, then something must have gone terribly, horrifically wrong, and she's keenly aware of that fact, so much so that it almost hurts. That he's not saying what happened is really only increasing her fears about how bad it must really have been.
At the same time, he's, well ... not dead. And on his feet, now. Will it do any good to press him for the truth when it's obviously already over and done with?
What she doesn't notice is the sigh that escapes her after she's been silent a little too long. ]
[December 24th, action]
Which might be why he's unabashed in his question, taking a seat opposite of her, with his own cup of tea warming his hands]
[December 24th, action]
... I guess so. You were pretty quiet too, you know. [ Said gently, and without reproach, as she picks up her own tea. They both have things to think about, clearly. ]
[December 24th, action]
For once, Sanji can't think of a word to say, and the air is saturated with the heavy fact. He gets as far as opening his mouth once, before it closes, and his eyes drop to stare at his tea]
[December 24th, action]
But she really can't think of the last time he was just lost for words around her. Not only that, but not even looking at her. ]
Dad...
[ She pauses, then shuts her eyes and takes a deep breath. When she reopens them and fixes her gaze on his face, her expression is very serious. ]
I don't want you to tell me. Whatever happened out there ... it's done. You're ... you're still here. [ A little more quietly. But she doesn't let her gaze fall. ] That's all that matters to me. So don't feel like you have to, or like you owe me. All I need is just ... to be able to see you. Here. And maybe give you a hug. [ Her smile is faint, weak, but there. ]
[December 24th, action]
But eventually...]
You don't care to know? [It's nothing but an honest question]
[December 24th, action]
It's not that. But would it really help either of us if I did?
[December 24th, action]
[A pause] But you can't really understand something if you're in the dark all the time. [It's not clear if he's talking about her, or something else. The statement stands on its own]
... I don't mind telling you, Xion. [His hesitancy isn't due to wanting to keep a secret from her, specifically. Old habits just die so very hard, sometimes, and he's consciously acknowledging it here]
[December 24th, action]
But the decision is not a hard one. ]
If you want to, then I'll listen, Sanji. I'll always listen to you.
[ She almost says "I'll always be here to listen to you," and realized in time that she can't promise that. Neither of them can. But as long as she is here, it's true - she'll always listen. ]
[December 24th, action]
... But she deserves to know. That, for him, is enough of a reason.]
The draft lasted five days. I spent at least half of that trapped in a shitty cave-in. [No food, or water] A blast got us out, but the Third Party didn't show us much of a warm welcome. [I was too tired to fight at my best... and Vivi-chan... I had to protect her, too.]
I got lucky. Kotetsu and Nami-san found us on the last day, before I died.
[December 24th, action]
... I'm glad. When ... when the Third Party found you, is that when...? [ She gestures, somewhat vaguely, to his shoulder, meaning to indicate his wings. ]
[December 24th, action]
Vivi-chan was with me. [he... doesn't think he needs to explain why he'd been so distracted]
[December 24th, action]
I bet you were pretty worn out by then, too. [ A deliberate understatement.
She pauses for a moment, then examines his expression carefully. ]
... did anything else happen?
[December 24th, action]
--No, you fuckin asshole, don't lead in like that.]
... Have you ever been on the sea before, Xion?
[December 24th, action]
[ But she's not sure she likes where this is going. ]
[December 24th, action]
[he takes a deep breath] Dehydration. All that shitty water around you, but if you don't have your own purified stuff, you'll die by the third day.
If you're lucky.
[December 24th, action]
You didn't have any supplies, did you?
[December 24th, action]
[December 24th, action]
What does she say? "Sorry" would be awful, and too little, and not even appropriate here. Pity is worse.
So she's silent, honestly lost for words by the magnitude of what happened to him. ]
[December 24th, action]
It was tough, rut... [It's here that he trails off suddenly, a little surprised by the direction his thoughts are taking - like he's trying to compensate for the ugliness of his past circumstances. It makes him frown, almost confused]
Heh. I don't remember the last time I got to talk with Vivi-chan like that...
[December 24th, action]
[ It's weak, and she knows it, and he knows it. Her smile is very faint, but ... understanding. She has a guess why he's suddenly going in that direction, putting a "but" on such a horrific thing. Sometimes it's easier that way. ]
[December 24th, action]
Xion's homecoming would be filled with more tears, he suspects.]
Yeah, it was.
[December 24th, action] dlgkjhaslkdghsdjbfk
But again she is quiet. She still doesn't know what to say, or how. But she can't stay silent forever, and so she finally rises, and gives Sanji a hug. ]
I don't want to say I'm sorry, because that doesn't sound right. Not for what you went through. But I'm glad, really glad, that you and Vivi made it. Not that I think ... I mean... [ A beat, as she gathers her thoughts. ] I think, no matter how bad it got, that there was no way you weren't going to get out of that. Even if it seems like it was just luck, or chance... it was you, Sanji. Of course everything turned out okay.
[ She knows that there is some inherent risk, in this display of faith, when really, it was random chance that freed him and Vivi. But at the same time... she really does believe that a way would have been found. She believes in her dad, 100%. ]
Re: [December 24th, action] oh Xion. ;; you said the right/wrong thing
No, she's wrong. A tiny tremble shudders through him at just how wrong she is about this, and he suddenly returns the hug, his head placed on top of hers.
So she doesn't have to see his crumbled expression.]
No, Xion. [He can barely hear his own voice under the torrent of emotion pounding in his ears, the sound of his heartbeat it's own shameful jab] It wasn't me.
[He didn't save himself. Vivi had to do all the work. He gave up back there, convinced it was the only way his nakama could stand a chance. You don't carry any dead weight with you when you're crawling out of hell.]
[December 24th, action] gdit dad you make her worry about you
Dad... [ She hugs him tight. ] Then what was it?
