... Of course. [He trades in his preemptive guilt for worry now, seeing as he's not in trouble but Nami still looks unhappy. He wipes at his hands with the towel thrown over his shoulder, and nods to the front door. She just came through there, but he figures she might want more privacy than the dining room or the kitchens might allow]

Oi, is everything alright? [Can't help that question, though]

With me? Yes. [She'd had time to get more and more antsy about this on her way over to see Sanji, because the more she thinks about Kotetsu's excuses they don't quite add up. She follows him out through the front door before following up.]

Has Kotetsu been doing a lot of shifts at Seventh Heaven lately?

[At the mention of Kotetsu...

You know those logic jumps Sanji is known for doing? Well, his expression darkens a little, though not from anger]

To keep his mind off shit, yeah.

... Did he mention Barnaby at all?

[So he was telling the truth on that score. Or part of it. Because Sanji's darkening expression tells her that niggling thought was on the money and she hasn't been told everything.]

He said Barnaby went home. A month ago.

... [Sighing]

Yeah, he went home. [There's a telling pause as Sanji carefully picks his words]

After he was killed. Kotetsu tried saving him, but. [A shake of the head. his voice tinged with solemness] I found them both in the forest. Kotetsu was the only one still breathing. Nearly lost the shithead, too.

...you've officially made Nami speechless, Sanji. From word that a friend died (and she didn't know, and is there any point mourning now that he's already alive again and back home?) to knowledge of how, how much it would hurt a man who isn't used to Luceti's cycle of death and to lose his partner to it and then not get him back--

[Sanji's not doing much better himself in the talking department. He lowers his gaze after a soft sigh. Just imparting that bit of knowledge was hard, all the more for remembering what it was like, to watch Kotetsu break down in the forest, destroyed by fever and injuries and the force of his own grief.

There was no easy way to tell her.]

Just-- would you keep an eye on him? [Probably a unnecessary request, that, but he asks it anyway, rubbing the back of his neck] That idiot probably never would've told you, but since only a couple people know, he's having a rough time as it is. [And barely eats, much to Sanji chagrin.]

/digs her way to old tags

Idiot's the word. [She's quiet.] He's bad at this.

...I need to talk to him.

[concasse]

[He nods, wincing slightly as his mind supplies him with images of what will probably happen when Nami finds the man again. He'll probably get in trouble, too, but... well, he'd have to regret this decision to really feel sorry about that.]

Yeah, he is. [He turns away a little, smiling slightly, as if giving Nami permission to run off and punch him] Try not to be too angry at him. It's not an easy thing to tell. [And who would want to, when they're drowning in their own guilt?]

I'm not-- [No wait, she cuts off. Sanji knows her too well on that one. At least it's not anger at Kotetsu, per se. Even if the poor guy is destined to bear the brunt of it.]
