Under the general settings app there's the keyboard section, and under that you can add or remove keyboards. Do you not have a French keyboard set up on your phone already...?

i did that for the characters i needed and since there's only a few of em they show up on the english keyboard

[which would be impossible for Japanese since EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT, but y'know]

when you consider how many characters there are in every language, it's even more impressive.

It's not difficult to find them. And there is one that looks like an English keyboard,
it just types out Japanese kana from that keyboard.
